Ruskin Bond is an 84 years old Anglo-Indian writer who is known for his literary works for children, mostly based in the Himalayan regions of India. A resident of Mussoorie, his literary works have earned him many honors such as the Padma Shree, Padma Bhushan, and Sahitya Academy Award. Quite a few of Mr Bond’s stories have been adapted to the screen in the past, with prominent films such as Junoon, Saat Khoon Maaf being some of them. With Parchhayee – Ghost Stories by Ruskin Bond, his paranormal short stories make the transition to the digital space.
About the Show:
A 12 episode web series, each episode of Parchhayee – Ghost Stories by Ruskin Bond is based on a short horror story written by Ruskin Bond. The episode “The ghost in the garden” starring Farida Jalal and Sarah Jane Dias released on 15th January 2019. ‘The Wind on the Haunted Hill’ is the second episode of the series.
The second episode is about Usha, her siblings and their mother who live in a haunted hilly village, where windstorms come almost every night. One day, when 12-year-old Usha was returning home from the market, she gets stuck in the storm and takes refuge in the ruins of an abandoned house that stands on the hill. It is here that she uncovers the sorrowful tale of an English family with two children. Parchhayee is a fantasy-tinged horror story that is based on a real story with content that is apt for all age groups.Review:
The performances by the cast are just amazing that is matched by some great direction by the veteran V. K. Prakash. Dilip Tahil, known for his role in several movies like Baazigar, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, Ra.One etc. is remarkable as the narrator of the episode. Watching the episode is like watching three simultaneous stories running at once, one about Usha, second about the English Couple and third about the militants and the homeless people.
All the stories are mould together to create an interesting tale that is spine chilling yet poignant. Performances by child actors Sara, Mazel, and Armaan are unbelievable as they have portrayed the characters with such realism and innocence. Overall, the entire episode comes as an engaging paranormal story that appeals to the views with great performances, spectacular direction, top-notch cinematography and a brilliant background score.
Why is Parchhayee better than other horror web series?
Normally, horror shows are mostly designed only for adults, featuring nerve-wracking, horrifying scenes. Also, such shows tend to contain adult content like violence and sex which make it inappropriate for children to watch. However, this web series comes with a promise of entertainment, a moral for the children along with ethical values. Through its 45 minute duration, we are taken into the mysterious yet fascinating world of mountains, valleys, forests, and ghost residing in them. So, I’m really looking to more episodes from Parchhayee in the future. I would call the series a must watch and would recommend you to download the ZEE5 app today to watch this wonderful series online.
