There is something about Delhi winters – the chilly morning, the fog, the hot beverage, the evening tea with hot pakora’s. For me winter is a season to rejoice, explore and tread new territory. History has always fascinated me. And Delhi has its own historic importance since the time of Mughals. It’s bestowed upon with marvelous monuments and from the mughal era.
The Exploration
My journey started with a visit to the famous Qutub Minar. It was constructed in 1192 by Qutab-ud-din Aibak, and later completed by his successor Iltutmish.
Qutub Minar, is the tallest minaret in India and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located in South Dehli – Qutub Minar is made of red sandstone and marble and has a height of 72.5 meters (237.8 ft). It contains whopping 379 stairs.
Before 1981, the general public could climb the top of Qutub Minar after passing through the seven-storey narrow staircase. However, on 4 December 1981 an accident occurred when the electricity was gone and the staircase of the tower went into darkness. Around 45 people were killed in a stampede that followed the electricity failure; most of the victims were children. In those days school children on Fridays were allowed freely in historical monuments and a lot of school groups were taking advantage. Subsequently public access has been forbidden.
The verses from the holy Qur’an are carved on sandstone walls of Qutub Minar. This monument serves the purpose of calling people for prayer in the Quwwat-ul-Islam mosque.
Attractions near Qutub Minar
The Iron Pillar is one of the metallurgical interests of the world. It is a thing to study as well as famous tourist destination. Traditionally people believe that if anyone standing in front of pillar with his back towards the column can encircle it with their arms, all his wishes will be fulfilled.
Then there is the beautiful green park in the entrance where you can sit, chill and relax with friends or family.
My day spent with my family in this beautiful place was simply wonderful. We enjoyed the fun filled day in bright sunlight with lot of gossip and photo session.
A must visit place for everyone – to admire the beauty and architecture, and also for those who prefer a calm laid back winter afternoons.
