Good Friday is a religious holiday observed primarily by Christians commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his death at Calvary. It is also known as Holy Friday, Great Friday, Black Friday or Easter Friday, though the latter properly refers to the Friday in Easter week.
Why is Good Friday referred to as “good”?When actually its a sad day?
God demonstrates his own love for us in this, While we were still sinners, “Christ died for us.”, “For Christ died for our sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive by the Spirit. He died for our sins ,so we sinners get salvation that’s why its called Good Friday .
Churches celebrate Good Friday with a subdued service, usually in the evening, in which Christ’s death is remembered with solemn hymns, prayers of thanksgiving, a message centered on Christ suffering for our sake ‘s and observance of the Lord’s Supper. Whether or not Christians choose to “celebrate” Good Friday, the events of that day should be ever on our minds because the death of Christ on the cross is the paramount event of the Christian faith.
Good Friday is a day of sadness, in which churches are empty and dark. Services are held in the afternoon. Many churches have a bitter drink prepared from leaves, vinegar, and other ingredients. This drink is for everyone to taste after the service.
On this day Christians commemorate the passion, or suffering, and death on the cross of the Lord,Jesus Christ .Usually Christians spend this day in fasting, prayer, repentance, and meditation on the agony and suffering of Christ on the cross.Christ suffering has won our redemption. In the solemn ceremonies of Good Friday, in the Adoration of the Cross, in the chanting of the ‘Reproaches’, in the reading of the Passion, and in receiving the pre-consecrated Host, we unite ourselves to our Savior, and we contemplate our own death to sin in the Death of our Lord.
The Three Hours.Service – Some churches hold prayer service during the three hours of Christ’s suffering on the Cross. It would be appropriate to observe a period of silence at home, for devotional reading and private prayer especially between the hours of noon and 3 o’clock in the afternoon. Some churches at times show movies like -The passion of Christ,so that we come to know the actual suffering Our Lord did to save human kind .
Tradition-After the church service ,people are served with Hot Cross Bun. The familiar hot cross buns are sweet rolls with the sign of the cross cut into it, and they are one of several traditional .
